HoR sans opposition

Surprisingly, the Nepali Congress (NC), the biggest party in the House of Representatives (HoR), has given the vote of confidence (VoC) to Prime Minister (PM) Pushpa Kamal Dahal. There are speculations about the NC’s move, expecting a favour from the MC’s side during the presidential election to be held after a few weeks. The NC’s political move has left the HoR without the main opposition – which is a rare phenomenon and goes against parliamentary democracy. However, it is not a new one in country’s political history. The NC had supported a minority government led by the CPN-UML leader Man Mohan Adhikari, in 1994. HOW TO MAINTAIN YOUR HEALTH

In the country’s recent political history, Dahal has emerged as a powerful prime minister, securing the highest number of votes while seeking the vote of confidence in the HoR. However, Dahal may not be as powerful as he seems to be since he is leading a very fragile coalition of leftist, rightist and centrist political forces having their own political principles and motives. It will be tough for him to meet the demands of all parties that have supported him in the HoR and hold his coalition partners intact. Constitutionally, he cannot cross the limit of 25 ministers in his cabinet to satisfy and accommodate ambitious leaders of coalition partners who wish to become the ministers. Both challenges and opportunity lie ahead for his government in fulfilling his ambitious promises as stated in his written speech while seeking the vote in the HoR “I want to take forward politics of consensus, cooperation and mutual trust: PM Dahal” (THT, Janaury 10, Page 1). In addition, his government has made public a 21-point common minimum programme focusing on good governance, corruption control, implementation of the constitution, and amendment of old acts and laws. It remains to be seen whether he will able to lead his delicately-formed coalition government to successfully implement this programme and satisfy the voters and the common public in the days to come.HELLO NEPAL
